A Major Rant!

Trials and tribulations, Kathleen’s (Our lovely little shop in Blackpool) was broken into in the early hours of Sunday morning. The most annoying thing is that amazingly the police actually caught the thieves red handed, actually inside the shop, the bit that is upsetting is that this does not guarantee a conviction, even more shocking is that one of these alleged thieves was very possibly the same person that was caught in precisely the same situation a few months ago and potentially the same person (he certainly matched a description given at the time) that came into the shop frightening the girls.
The thing is this Kathleen’s is a lovely shop, not necessarily the busiest shop in the world but it provides three/four florists with a livelihood, it provides the community with a proper florist shop, with qualified florists who can offer an excellent service in and out of the season.
All of this is in jeopardy because a couple of idiots think they can break in doing £1200.00 worth of damage to steal what absolutely does not belong to them, Kathleen’s has been broken into already a number of times this year, we have nothing to steal (Other than flowers) they cannot access the chemist via Kathleen’s or any other premises. But every time they break in, we have to replace the window, the door or pay for the roof to be repaired and though we can claim on our insurance (apart from the excess) our insurers will undoubtedly increase the premium or eventually insist on roller shutters which incidentally Kathleen’s quite simply can’t afford.
We asked the police woman (Who seems as frustrated as us) why a custodial sentence is un-likely, she explained that the accused may say that they were just passing by and happened to notice a big gaping hole in our door and so they climbed in to check that everything was ok, the reason they have some bits and pieces of the staffs property on their person is just to prevent any would be thieves from taking it, so they are in fact protecting it! (This supposedly was their excuse last time they were caught red handed).
We never ever allow there to be only one person in the shop when it is open, there are undesirables that knock about every town and it wouldn’t be safe, we have a walky talky radio that links to the police station just in case and we have a burglar alarm, we are taking responsibility for the safety of the staff and the shop to a level that we can afford.
We have now taken to removing any pieces of funeral work for early delivery and storing them at the St. Annes shop for safe keeping, we ensure that no paper orders are kept on the premises because we don’t want to lose them in the mess that follows one of these break ins, but this is all so upsetting for the staff and us, we know far worse things happen to other people but really none of us should have to put up with it!

Fall in New England

Who among us could honestly say Fall in New England is not the prettiest time of year? In western Mass. we start to see cars driving slowly down roads admiring all of natures beauty. With fall here Thanksgiving is only around the corner, time to be with family and friends and to remember all that we have to be thankful for living in this great country of ours. We at Carey's Flowers see college students who are waiting to see the first snow fall of their lives. The excitement is overwhelming for them and we often see them outside on the sidewalks cell phone in hand calling home to Hawaii or some other warm climate home when the first snow starts to fall. Ahh the beauty and wonder of nature. I am so happy and blessed to be able to work with, near, and around the beauty of fresh flowers everyday.

48 hours of heaven for Jason

Today the “Big Guy” and I are going on one of our winter monthly trips, they are affectionately known as a “Mini Cruise” they are in fact a P&O ferry to Rotterdam. We take this trip the first weekend of each month from September through to May each year (The summer months are too busy with weddings). We go in search of fabulous new things for us to sell in both shops, on this trip we are particularly looking for magical morsels of loveliness for Christmas.
We will arrive at Euro port and be awoken by the dulcet tones of the entertainment manager via the loud speaker at around 5:00am tomorrow morning, Jason is very economy conscious (the trip has to be viable) so we will eat the Madeleine’s I have prepared and yet to bake for breakfast. The cabin/cupboard is small (only one of us can stand up at a time) there is a small shower and this really gets you going as it has a Russian roulette quality about it. We are then invited to the car deck to disembark, we drive across country go on a short drive on drive off ferry at Rozenberg and arrive in Aalsmeer in time for the flower auction.
We do buy to bring back and also have other beautiful things sent on to us, we have the opportunity of viewing all the new varieties of fresh flowers, we can place orders for special flowers for forthcoming events and pick up samples for our event clients to see.
We eat in some dubious places, Jason loves the meatball pistolet, I myself am not keen and opt for the soup, the coffee is very good and very strong, and it keeps you going. We leave the Aalsmeer area around 5:00pm (When I have lost the will to live).
We always stop off in a village Maassluis to buy a whole cooked chicken (they cut it up for us thankfully) and some fresh apple cake this is our feast for the cabin on the way back, we wash it down with a bottle of duty free (helps us to sleep).
Besides the amazing flowers and the wonderful arty designer pieces we buy this trip has an absolutely free bi-product, Jason and I talk without interruption, the phones don’t work, there is no TV, there are no children, staff or customers to take our attention, we only have each other for a full 48 hours.
Now I know this sound slightly sad but I love it, this bi-product is the best bit, we have time to really thrash things out, discuss new ideas, and entirely talk ourselves into and out of some of my most ridiculous plans. I adore Jason he is a truly wonderful person not least for being prepared to spend 48 hours being browbeaten by me!

I will post about our adventures on our return...

Quantum of Solace

Last night Jason and I were lucky enough to be invited to a James Bond Premiere, we were invited by our lovely friend Peter Jackson, he does awfully well selling James’ favoured watch Omega, I am a James Bond fan, not a know all the names of the baddies or Bond girls kinda fan just one of those that’s seen all the films. Peter is so generous and we along with a few hundred other guests enjoyed Champagne, fantastic bright red Omega Good bags, I hunted for the keys to the Aston Martin in the depths of it but no luck, however I am now the proud owner of a Quantum of Solace Omega Pen, a bag of Chocolate gold (the best bit) and some extremely good reading material (beautiful brochures of Omega & Peter Jackson Jewellery, I’ve left it out and open at an appropriate page for Jason).
Mr Jackson (Peter’s Dad, I just can’t call him Lawrence, he commands massive respect and I quite simply couldn’t) made me a fabulous offer, “How about opening a shop in Antibes” he said and then went on, “I’ll finance it and you run it” I know he was joking but, have you ever had one of those dreams that is just so good and when you wake up it’s deeply disappointing to realise it wasn’t real, well I had just such a dream, I was arranging flowers on Daniel Craig’s yacht somewhere near Antibes, he came in threw his car keys over to me and said “take it it’s yours, the way you arrange flowers is un-surpassed”
Back to Bond, Quantum of Solace for me was simply brilliant, there was a point to it all, he was driven, passionate and wanted revenge, this I understand. Jason didn’t like it as much as Casino Royale but we both agreed that the Opera part was gorgeous and that Daniel Craig is abso- cotton picking lootly James Bond.
Thank you Peter for inviting us. We all need to dream...
